Counselling is a supportive, therapeutic process that can help people when they are facing difficulties. Some reasons people choose to see a counsellor include:
Support during overwhelming life events.
Developing skills to manage difficulties.
Enjoying life and relationships more.
Working towards your goals.
Counselling can be either shorter or longer term, depending on what is most appropriate for your situation. The approach we take will be decided collaboratively, and support is always designed to help promote clarity, new options, and inner and outer resources for change.
I take an empathic, non-judgmental approach to counselling and psychotherapy, and have provided counselling services for people facing a variety of issues. I am especially experienced in the following areas:
Benefits of Counselling:
• Feel listened to and validated, feel your experiences, thoughts and
• Be encouraged and have your strengths, and choices acknowledged.
• Gain information and awareness about issues affecting your health & wellbeing.
Longer Term Benefits:
• Support to make decisions, identify goals and learn strategies to achieve them.
• Heal emotionally if you have experienced loss or trauma.
• Develop deeper insight and understanding of your self and relationships.
What happens in a Counselling Session:
If you decide to try counselling with me, the first session will be an opportunity for you to tell me your story and discuss what you would like to work on. By taking a personal history, I will be able to assess your individual needs and recommend a suitable counselling method. Working collaboratively, the first session is an opportunity to reach an agreement on how we will approach counselling together.
Counselling is often referred to as "Talking Therapy", and in most cases sessions consist of therapeutic conversations between counsellor and client. Additionally, it may be effective to use other techniques, such as drawing/art, meditation or relaxation exercises, walking in nature, and other experiential activities that can facilitate the healing process.
Sessions last for 50-60 minutes and treatment is most effective when sessions are regularly attended, usually weekly to begin with. Progress will be reviewed at regular intervals, to ensure we are taking the most helpful approach for achieving your goals, and responding to any changing needs.
You can see more detailed information on the approaches I use on my counselling methods page.
